How Behind the Site works
Behind the Site publishes one dossier per website: who is behind it, when it started, where it is based, roughly how big it is, whether it raised money, which names and domains it used before, and how it changed over time. Every fact links to the public source it came from and carries a confidence label.
What a dossier contains
- Who runs it: the organization behind the domain, confirmed from the site itself or a source that ties the two together.
- Founders: names and roles, with a line on what each did before. Only professional facts, never personal ones.
- Age: the founding year and the date the domain was first registered, which are often years apart.
- Location: the headquarters and any other offices.
- Size: an employee range such as 11 to 50, never a falsely exact number.
- Funding: known rounds and investors, or signs that it is self-funded. When nothing can be found either way, it says so.
- Platforms: web, iPhone, Android, desktop apps, browser extensions and APIs, each backed by a store listing or download page.
- History: former names and domains, a dated timeline, real pivots with the before and after, and notable news.
Where the facts come from
Only public sources: domain registration records, the company's own website and legal pages, archived versions of its homepage, public filings, app store listings, and published news and interviews. Each fact on a dossier lists its sources at the bottom of the page so you can check them yourself.
Every dossier is checked before it is published. Dossiers are dated; the date at the top tells you when the research was done.
What the confidence labels mean

| Confirmed | Stated by the company itself (its site, filings or store listing), or by two independent sources. |
| Likely | One reputable source, such as a news report or an interview. |
| Unverified | A single weak source or a reasonable inference. Treat it as a lead, not a fact. |
Facts that could not be confirmed at all are listed under Not confirmed instead of being guessed.
When a website is not here yet
Searching for a site that has no dossier counts as a request. Leave an email on that page and you will get a single message when it is published. The most searched sites are researched first. You can also ask for one on the contact page.
Corrections and removals
If something is wrong or out of date, use the contact page and choose A correction, naming the website and what should change. If you are named in a dossier and want your details removed, choose A removal request. Removal requests about people are honored.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no account and no paywall.
How current is a dossier?
Each one shows the date it was researched. Companies change, so check the date and the sources for anything recent.
Does Behind the Site contact the companies?
No. Dossiers are compiled from what is already public. Companies can send corrections through the contact page.
Why is the founding year different from the domain date?
Many companies buy their domain before they start, or start under another name and move to the domain later. Both dates are shown because the gap is often part of the story.
